Zane Grey (1872 1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that presented an idealized image of the Old West. Grey wrote not only Westerns, but two hunting books, six childrens books, two baseball books, and eight fishing books. Many of them became bestsellers. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book.
In addition to the success of his printed works, they later had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. As of 2012, 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, had been made that were based loosely on his novels and short stories.
The Last Trail is a sequel to Spirit of the Border which is Zane Greys first Frontier Trilogy - Betty Zane, The Last Trail, and The Spirit of the Border. Inspired by the life and adventures of the authors great- great grandmother, Betty Zane tells the story of the last battle of the American Revolution, in which the heroine was a young, spunky, and beautiful frontier girl named Betty Zane. The first novel in the trilogy is Betty Zane, Betty Zane's Grey's first published work, and The Last Trail, which focuses on the life of Jonathan Zane.
"Zane Grey tells it in a life-story of a splendid Indian youth, a story in which the glory, as well as the tragedy, of a race is faithfully mirrored. Zane Grey's hero is a boy of special promise, and because of this he is given the white man's education. But among his people he is all-Indian - intelligent, proud and, above all, self-respecting.
To the West comes a charming girl. She becomes a part of the story the moment her foot touches Western earth, once the Empire of the Indian. Together with the proud Indian youth she is a participant in the scenes which show the disappearance of a race, 'the vanishing Indian.'"
