Sir Hugh Jones was born in 1923 in Llangollen, North Wales, where his father was Headmaster of the County School. Educated at Ludlow and Selwyn College, Cambridge, he went on to serve in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
Following a career spanning twenty-six years in diplomatic and civil service, he then became Director General of the English Speaking Union. Sir Hugh's working life culminated with his positions as Secretary General and then Honorary Treasurer of the Liberal Party.
Married with Three children, Sir Hugh now resides in Avebury, Wiltshire, where he is a tireless conservation and community campaigner. Jones published the first volume of his autobiography, Diplomacy to Politics by way of the Jungle in 2002 and the second Campaigning Face to Face in 2007.
"Diplomacy to Politics is a true story of twentieth-century travel and venture, told in an unusually informative and entertaining way, including the author’s diplomatic career in Europe, the Middle East, North America and Africa, and an inside account of the ‘Great Debate’ campaign of 1971 and the parliamentary battles of 1971/72 which took Britain into Europe."
