Willie Morris THE LAST OF THE SOUTHERN GIRLS First Edition

First UK edition, first print hardback of THE LAST OF THE SOUTHERN GIRLS, by Willie Morris and published by Andre Deutsch Limited in 1974.

The book is in very good condition (clean orange boards and bright silver lettering on spine) with only minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light rubbing and creasing especially to top edges, light bumping to corners, very light staining to back cover, nothing too drastic at all). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

The Last of the Southern Girls is about a golden girl from the South and the place that she has made her home: the Washington of Capitol Hill. With its glittering cast of politicians, socialites, ambassadors and correspondents - not to mention parasites - it provides a brilliant and highly topical picture of the patterns of power and the polarity of love and ambition in the most powerful city in the Western world.

Carol Hollywell is a woman of supreme charm, caprice and sexuality: a flirt, a brain, a wit, a fount of energy to which the powerful as well as the aspiring are irresistibly drawn. She dines with Senators, she dances with the President. Her rise from queen of Ole Miss to belle of Capitol Hill, her romantic entanglements (real and imagined), her brilliant but disastrous marriage and her subsequent divorce, and above all her overriding instinct for 'alliance with greatness' - all these make her the perpetual target of Washington gossip.

With her Congressman lover - idealist, reformer, with his sights set at the top - Carol's generous sexuality finds real fulfilment for the first time. They share ideals and goals and take delight in each other's skills at manoeuvring in the Washington maze. But in both of them the habit of using people, even each other, for advancement of their own ends is too firmly ingrained, and gradually the very drives that brought them together in the first place propel their love affair into jeopardy.
