William Makepeace Thackeray VANITY FAIR Folio Society 1996

First folio printing slipcased hardback of VANITY FAIR by William Makepeace Thackeray (with an introduction by Fay Weldon and illustrations by Roland Pym). Published by The Folio Society in 1996.

The book is in near fine condition (illustrative cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light colour fading to the gilt lettering on the spine. Plain slipcase is in near fine condition with only a tiny indentation to the top edge. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

No one is better equipped in the struggle for wealth and worldly success than the alluring and ruthless Becky Sharp, who defies her impoverished background to clamber up the class ladder. Her sentimental companion Amelia, however, longs only for caddish soldier George. As the two heroines make their way through the tawdry glamour of Regency society, battles military and domestic are fought, fortunes made and lost. The one steadfast and honourable figure in this corrupt world is Dobbin with his devotion to Amelia, bringing pathos and depth to Thackerays gloriously satirical epic of love and social adventure.

683 pages including Frontispiece and illustrations.
