In early 1813, William Daniell conceived of the ambitious plan to travel around the entire coastline of Britain while producing an illustrated work of the voyage. The journey began at Lands End in the summer of 1813, and from Clovelly in North Devon continued across the Bristol Channel to Wales.
William Daniell's Voyage Round Great Britain, is described by Tooley as 'A magnificent series of plates. The most important colour plate (work) on British Topography'. The plates include images of the Isle of Arran, a number of Mull, the Isle of Jura, many of Argyleshire, the Isle of Eig, the Isle of Rum, Loch-alsh, several of the Isle of Skye, some in and around the Island of Staffa including Fingals Cave, Iona, Ben-more, Ayrshire, the Crag of Ailsa, views on the Clyde, the Isle of Bute, and one of Refrewshire.
William Daniell was an extremely accomplished aquatinter and etcher and at times experimented with the latest printmaking techniques as adopted by J. M. W. Turner, for instance wiping out highlights in his watercolours. In 'Oriental Scenery' he used sepia and bluish grey for printing and stained the prints so as to replicate the effects of the original watercolours; colourists were only employed to add small touches to figures or foreground foliage.
He was a prolific printmaker, producing a series of high-quality productions that included 'A Brief History of Ancient and Modern India' (1802-1805); 'Interesting Selections from Animated Nature' (1807-1812); 'A Familiar Treatise on Perspective' (1810); 'View of London' (1812); 'Illustrations of the Island of Staffa' (1818); 'Sketches of South Africa' (1820); 'Views of Windsor, Eton and Virginia Water' (1827-1830), and the 'Oriental Annual' (1835).
His most famous independent work was his 'Voyage round Great Britain' (1814-1825), which made extensive use of sepia. His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution and he became a Royal Academician in 1822.
Voyage Round Great Britain was published in eight volumes between 1814 and 1825 and included 308 hand-coloured aquatints. This Folio Society edition features a selection of 114 of Daniell's best and most representative aquatints.
It is a detailed first person chronicle of the author's travels throughout Great Britain, following the coast, and documenting through words and paintings, the villages, castles, cliffs, bays, inlets and other sites in England, Scotland and Wales.
The writings of Ayton and Daniell have been supplemented with the experiences and impressions of a wide range of travellers who visited the British coast in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The extracts have been strung together with brief passages of editorial commentary which retrace the route Daniell purported to follow.
