Wilbur Smith THE ANGELS WEEP First Edition First Print Hardback Heinemann 1982

First edition first print hardback of THE ANGELS WEEP by Wilbur Smith and published by William Heinemann Ltd., London, in 1982.

The book is in very good condition (clean orange cloth boards and gilt lettering to spine and an embossed bird decoration to front board) with light rubbing to the head of the spine and age tanning around the page edges, as is common with this title. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket (no price shown, but not a book club jacket) which has creasing and rubbing to edges and corners, a couple of fingernail closed tears, and some moisture staining to the edges inside the jacket (not visible from the outside). Internally, the pages are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

The Angels Weep is the third in Wilbur Smith's series about the Ballantyne family of Rhodesia. The first part of the book is set immediately before and during the Second Matabele War, then the second part jumps forward to the final days of the Rhodesian Bush War. Dreams of Empire, desire for land and its hidden mineral wealth and for power over a proud and warlike people: such were the forces that drove Englishmen in Queen Victoria's last years to thrust deep into an untamed continent and found a new dominion. With those Pioneers rode Ralph Ballantyne, a man whose ambition and sense of destiny made him at once his leader's greatest servant and betrayer.
