First UK edition, second impression hardback of BIRD WATCHING AS A HOBBY, by William Donald Campbell with photographic illustrations by H. A. Thompson and published by Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd, London in 1961 (originally published in 1959). Signed by the illustrator (Thompson) on the title page.
The book is in very good condition (Clean brown cloth boards with white lettering on spine and illustrated front cover) with only slight wear to the dust jacket (some rubbing & creasing to the edges and one small closed tear to the back top spine corner, slight foxing inside the jacket which is invisible from outside). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.
"As the author frankly states, the primary aim of this book is to "infect" his readers with a hobby from which he himself has derived both pleasure and mental stimulation, a hobby whose fascination, like so many good things, it is impossible to define or analyse, but which, unlike so many other good things, can be indulged in at little or no expense. He is well qualified for such a task, for few amateur ornithologists can have handled so many wild British birds as the author - at least 10.000, of some 115 species, having been caught and ringed by him during the last 26 years."
