The book is in very good condition (Clean dark navy cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with only light wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (slight creasing to the top edges and faint markings at the back, a small moisture stain to the bottom edge inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
Tristan Egolf (1971-2005) was born in Spain and resided in Philadelphia; Paris; rural Indiana; Vienna; Oxford, Mississippi; Amsterdam; New York City; London; and New Orleans. His father, was a National Review journalist and his mother, a painter.
Egolf was a young writer of astonishing prowess and imagination. His first novel was published in France in 1998 by Gallimard after it had been rejected by more than 70 U.S. publishers. Lord of the Barnyard was subsequently published in the UK and the USA and received moderately favorable reviews – with a few raves worldwide. His second book, Skirt and the Fiddle, was published in 2002 to even better critical response. On May 7, 2005, shortly after completing his third, the manuscript for Kornwolf, Egolf took his own life. He had also been working on a screenplay for Lord of the Barnyard, left unfinished. Outside his writing, Egolf achieved some renown as a political activist.
Lord of the Barnyard opens with the death of a woolly mammoth in the last Ice Age and concludes with a greased-pig chase at a funeral in the modern-day Midwest. In the interim there are two hydroelectric dam disasters, fourteen tavern brawls, one shoot-out in the hills, three cases of suspected arson, a riot in the town hall, a lone tornado, a coven of Methodist crones, an encampment of Appalachian crop thieves, six renegade coal-truck operators, an outraged mob of factory rats, a dysfunctional poultry plant, and one autodidact goat-roping farm boy by the name of John Kaltenbrunner.
