Antonio Zancanaro (1906-1985) better known as Tono began to take part in group exhibitions in 1933. His friendship with the doctor Rubinato George, who introduced him to art, was an important one in his life. In 1935, in Florence, Tono met artist Ottone Rosai, from whom he claimed to have received 'the first and only fundamental lesson about the nature of art'. He matured the ideological approach of the artist. He befriended Hector Luccini and, shortly after, Eugenio Curiel.
Tono was attracted by the university environment, and in particular he attended the youth group linked to Trieste Curiel, where the first 'Gibbo' (dream caricature of Mussolini), was executed in 1937 for the philosopher and friend Hector Luccini. The Gibbo is probably the best known graphical invention by Tono Zancanaro. Shortly afterwards he joined a group in the university which provided help for the education of Jewish children who had been discriminated against.
In 1942 he joined the Italian Communist Party. Suspecting he had an incurable disease Tono spent weeks in the hospital (and this is where, as he describes, he drew the outlines of the shadows seen on the walls which inspired the graphic 'Gibbo': the so-called "protogibbi"). Although Zancanaro remained an unsurpassed master in graphics, particularly in the pure line and engraving, he worked extensively with oil and watercolors, and engraved glass jars specially made for him by the master glassmakers of Murano.
He also developed an interest in working with his hands and built a kiln, where he made vases, dishes, and also sculptures in terracotta. In 1970 he became master of engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna. In 1972 the first major retrospective exhibition was held at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, which was followed in 1974 by a second retrospective at the Civic Art Gallery in the City of Palermo. He died in Padua on June 3, 1985.

Catalogued and reproduced in black and white and colour, 766 engravings done with different techniques: etching, aquatint, drypoint, drawings, linoleografia. In addition to the text by the editor, the volume contains the writings of Carlo Munari and Bussotti.
