"Russian Tanks of World War II is an authoritative study of over 40 types of tanks that served with the Soviet armoured forces before 1945, detailing their development and use, from the early days of the tank arm in the 1920s, through the Stalinist purges of the late 1930s and the German invasion in 1941, to the epic tank battle of Kursk, and eventual victory in the streets of Berlin.
The growth and development of Stalin's armoured might is illustrated by rare black-and-white photographs. They include images of tank training in the 1930s, parades in Moscow's Red Square, photographs taken on active service, and dramatic shots of the major tank battles of the war. The photographs are complemented by detailed line artworks of Soviet tanks and foreign tanks in Soviet service, all with exhaustive specifications.
The text describes the foundation of the Soviet tank arm in the early years after the Revolution, the acquisition of the Christie suspension system from the United States, the rapid growth of the Red Army's tank force under Marshal Tukachevsky, and the disaster that was the Stalinist purge of the army, which crippled the tank forces just as Hitler's Wehrmacht became a serious threat to Soviet security. The book then covers the various tanks ranged against Hitler in World War II, divided into categories for easy comparison; light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, late war tanks and foreign tanks in Soviet service. The T-34, the most famous and successful of all the Soviet tanks, has a chapter in its own right.
A must for any enthusiast, Russian Tanks of World War II is the definitive study of the equipment and tactics of the Soviet armoured forces that came back from the brink of defeat to crush the might of Hitler's Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front."
Bean is a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and a specialist in the history of amphibious operations.
