Thorkild Hansen NORTH WEST TO HUDSON BAY First Edition

First UK edition first print hardback of NORTH WEST TO HUDSON BAY (The adventurous life of a master mariner and explorer) by Thorkild Hansen and published by Collins in 1970. First English translation.

The book is in very good condition (grey cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with light bumping to the top and bottom edges of the spine. Very light foxing to top page edges. The book is in a very good- unclipped dust jacket which has light rubbing to the edges, fraying to the head and tail of the spine and a few chips and tiny tears. Previous owner inscription to inside front board. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions.

Jens Munk, 16th century Danish seaman and explorer, was one of only a few who escaped alive from his search for the North-West Passage to India; his diary of the months he lay trapped in the ice is the basis of this exceptional biography interweaving his persistent, ultimately fruitless quest with the political intrigues of the Danish court.

348 pages including numerous maps and woodcut illustrations plus Index.
