Thomas Hodgkin THE OSTROGOTHS Folio Society 2001

First folio printing slipcased hardback of THE OSTROGOTHS Volume 3 of THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE by Thomas Hodgkin (including introduction by Peter Heather). Published by The Folio Society in 2001.

The book is in near fine condition (pictorial boards with gilt lettering to cloth spine) with no significant wear. The book is in a near fine slipcase that also has no wear to speak of.

With volumes III and IV, originally published in 1885, Hodgkin ushered in a new phase in his history. Volumes I and II had examined the late Roman period, dealing with short-lived invasions of Italy and the mutiny of its last arguably Roman army. These next two volumes, however, took the story from around 480 to 555, into a decidedly post-Roman world which saw the first in a series of conquests of all or part of the Italian landscape by outside invaders - the conquests would be the main concern of the rest of Hogdkin's project.

480 pages including Illustrations, Appendices, Sources, Tables and Index.
