Thomas Hodgkin THE IMPERIAL RESTORATION Folio Society 2001
First folio printing slipcased hardback of THE IMPERIAL RESTORATION Volume 4 of THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE by Thomas Hodgkin (including introduction by Peter Heather). Published by The Folio Society in 2001.The book is in near fine condition (pictorial boards with gilt lettering to cloth spine) with no significant wear. The book is in a near fine slipcase that also has no wear to speak of.
In his 1885 preface to volumes III and IV of his history, Hodgkin wrote: "It will perhaps alarm my readers... that in the second of these an interval of only eighteen years is accounted for." The comparative density of this fourth volume is a direct effect of the quantity of sources available for the mid-sixth century, and the complexity of the story this allowed him to reconstruct: the Byzantine conquest of Ostrogothic Italy and related matters, not least some very important developments in ecclesiastical affairs.
488 pages including Illustrations, Appendices, Sources, Tables and Index.
