THE EAST MIDLANDS (Regional Railway Handbooks No 1) P Howard Anderson

First edition, first print hardback of THE EAST MIDLANDS (Regional Railway Handbooks No 1), by P Howard Anderson and published by David St John Thomas (David & Charles) 1986.

The book is in very good condition. The dust jacket, which is price clipped, has some minor wear (rubbing to the edges, creasing to the top of the front cover, light bumping to corners, nothing too drastic). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

A thorough survey of Inter-City, Provincial Sector and railfreight activity in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire forms the core of this volume; there is also a chapter on the best places for observation and photography. A generous and varied selection of illustrations helps develop certain themes as well as tempt the reader to make his own visits. Maps have been approached in a new way: each of the five East Midlands counties has been dealt with separately, and a wealth of detail including passenger lines with the year of opening, freight lines and terminals, abandoned routes with opening and closure dates, notable buildings and engineering works and preserved lines as well as museums should make the maps valuable companions for anyone visiting the region or travelling around it by train.

Heritage has not been neglected in the text, either. A look at the rise, decline and rescue of the system is followed by sections on how the railways influenced the landscape and social fabric of the area. Tracing lost lines and walking former track beds converted into footpaths have become popular pursuits and a few examples have been examined. A reference section and comprehensive index are also provided. Finally, a number of historic photographs, mostly unpublished, have been included to give just a hint of rail travel as it used to be prior to the 1980s.

208 pages including an index. Illustrated throughout with black & white photographs, maps and line drawings.
