The Red and the Black is an historical psychological novel in two parts, first published in 1830. It is considered to be one of the earliest works of realism and follows the fortunes of a provincial young man as he tries to rise above his modest upbringing and climb the social ladder using skill, hipocracy and deception - a quest which ultimately leads to his downfall.
