Stanley Middleton's new novel, After a Fashion, tells the story of J.J. Harrington, an academic in his early thirties, of considerable authority, whose life, for all its apparent fulfilment, is flawed by emotional failure. He has been left by his actress wife, and has settled for a kind of success - esteem within his faculty, an excellent book or two, a handsome house, a refusal to involve himself deeply with other people.

When his professor suggests that a young woman academic might benefit from his help, and at the same time both his former wife makes contact and Harrington meets Anne, his relatively unsophisticated neighbour, the stage is set for major changes in his life. But will he be able to respond to them?
