Called by the International Herald Tribune 'the most well-known expatriate Thai in the world,' Somtow Sucharitkul (S.P. Somtow) is a composer, a science fiction, fantasy, and horror author and media personality whose talents have entertained fans the world over.
A severe case of musical burnout caused Somtow to turn to writing in the early 1980s, and he soon produced a succession of over forty books in several genres under the pen name S.P. Somtow, winning numerous awards for such novels as Vampire Junction , today considered a classic of gothic literature and taught in gothic lit courses around the U.S.A. His semi-autobiographical memoir Jasmine Nights, prompted George Axelrod, Oscar-winning writer of Breakfast at Tiffany's, to refer to him as 'the J.D. Salinger of Siam.' He has just finished a stint as president of the Horror Writers' Association. His most recent books are Tagging the Moon, Fairy Tales of Los Angeles and Dragon's Fin Soup.
His novels have been translated into about a dozen languages. He also dabbled in filmmaking, directing a couple of low-budget films during his years in Los Angeles. As a science fiction writer, he is known for several series, among which are Mallworld, Inquestor, and The Aquiliad. He was first published as Somtow Sucharitkul in the late 1970s in the pages of Asimov's and Analog science fiction magazines, and wrote several stories and novels under that name before changing his byline to S. P. Somtow for personal reasons.
"In Vienna in the 1880s the Graf von Wolfing is gathering his family to flee the persecution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the distant wild plains of the American West. For von Wolfing is the last leader of a pack of werewolves who have been hunted by humans almost to extinction. In America the pack will be free, and the prey, ignorant savages, will be helpless before them.
But in the Dakota territory the United States is engaged in removing the Lakota from their homeland in a war of attrition which will end at the massacre at Wounded Knee. And among the Lakota is a small, enigmatic tribe, the Shungmanitu, from whom the Shamans are chosen, the people of the Wolf, who can change shape at full moon; who dance the Moon Dance at Weeping Wolf Rock to renew the cycle of the Earth; who protect the tribe...
In his first horror novel since the remarkable Vampire Junction S. P. Somtow creates a wildly terrifying symphony from the clash of cultures. Moon Dance is an electrifying novel of epic proportions spanning two continents and a hundred years history."
