Somerville and Ross began as a partnership between two flesh and blood women. It ended as a partnership between a woman and a ghost. The ghost was that of Violet Martin ('Martin Ross') , who died in 1915. It haunted Edith OEnone Somerville to the day of her own death in 1949. With the help of a medium Edith consulted Violet about plots for stories, asking for suggestions, criticisms, ideas, thus the posthumous retention of the partner's name on title pages.
