Sir Evelyn Wrench STRUGGLE 1914-1920 First Edition Signed
First edition, first print hardback of STRUGGLE 1914-1920 by Sir Evelyn Wrench and published by Ivor Nicholson & Watson in 1935. Signed with a personal message to a previous owner by Wrench on the front endpaper. The book is in good condition (red cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with light bumping to the corners of the front board with a small indentation to the top edge, light creasing to the top and bottom of the spine, light marks to the boards and age spotting to the page edges. The book is in a good unclipped dust jacket that has creasing to the top and bottom of the front and back covers and spine (with several fingernail closed tears and a one inch closed tear to the top of the spine), light age spotting and rubbing to the edges. Internally, a few pages are stained and one page with a photograph is torn halfway, but they are otherwise clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Sir Evelyn Wrench, founder of the Over-seas League, published his first book Uphill, in 1934, and it met with instantaneous success. Uphill told the story of Sir evelyn's early days: Struggle opens with the War, and from contemporary letters and diaries the drama of those dreadful days is portrayed with extraordinary vividness.
The closing chapters of Struggle deal with post-war England and America, and there are many interesting sidelights on President Wilson, 'Pussyfoot' Johnson, ex-President Taft, Cardinal Gibbons, Owen Wister and Admiral Sims.
Sir Evelyn's story is one of practical idealism, the strength of which grows with the passing of years.
