Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.

Simon Hughes was a professional cricketer for fifteen years during which he won four Championship medals with Middlesex and played all over the world. He retired in 1994 to write for the Daily Telegraph. His previous book, A Lot of Hard Yakka, won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award in 1997. He is now 'The Analyst' on Channel 4's Test Match coverage. He has a wife, Tanya, a son Callum, and only a couple of skeletons left in the cupboard.

"'I wanted passion and papaya, classic beaches and cool bars, exotic food and topless sunbathing. And, as an aspiring fast bowler, I wanted the air to be rent with the clatter of leather on stumps. Very important.'

Simon Hughes' previous bestseller, A Lot of Hard Yakka, chronicled the triumph and torment of a county cricketer's life in the English game.

Now he plays away in Yakking Around the World, a joyride through eleven winters playing cricket abroad in each of the major cricketing nations. Fed up with dark, frigid English winters and Antiques Roadshow, he sought a hotter, happier world where the light was bright, the pitches zigged and zagged and the girls were game. A land of sun, seam and sex.

He travelled to four continents, twenty-eight countries and played for forty-one different teams. Sometimes he didn't like them; sometimes they didn't like him.

Yakking Around the World is a series of funny, acutely observed portraits of those favourite faraway places - Australia, the Caribbean, South Africa, India - telling you the things the travel brochures don't, and the peculiarities of each cricket mad culture.

Why are Australians so pleased with themselves when they live in a vast, useless desert full of spiders? Why are New Zealanders always stoned? How can West Indians walk so slow and bowl so fast? And what have the Taj Mahal and Liz Hurley got in common? Simon Hughes considers all these questions and attempts to answer the most imponderable one of all: why, when England gave cricket to the rest of the world, is the rest of the world so much better at it?.

'Brilliantly funny' – Chris TARRANT

'A very funny, often outrageous book' – Ian WOOLDRIDGE, Daily Mail

'Travel, cricket and romance: Simon Hughes knows how to mix it' – Sebastian FAULKS
