S R Crockett SWEETHEART TRAVELLERS First Edition 1895

First UK edition, first print hardback of SWEETHEART TRAVELLERS A Child's Book for Children, for Women and for Men, by S.R. Crockett and published by Wells Gardner, Darton & Co., London in 1895. Illustrated by Gordon Browne and W.H.C. Groome.

The book is in good condition (Sage green cloth boards with light geen swirly decoration and black lettering and illustration on front, back and spine which is slightly faded and creased). No dust jacket. Top and bottom edges of the spine and corners are bumped and rubbed. There is a crack along the ridge between the front board and the front end paper, but all pages are still intact. There are some light stains in parts to the back cover, slight damp staining on the front endpaper and first few pages. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. There is a small previous owner's inscription on the front endpaper dated Dec. 1895. There is very slight tanning and foxing to the pages in parts.

Samuel Rutherford Crockett was raised on his grandfather's Galloway farm, and graduated from Edinburgh University during 1879. After some years of travel he became in 1886 minister of Penicuik. During that year he produced his first publication, Dulce Cor (Latin: Sweet Heart), a collection of verse. He eventually abandoned the Free Church ministry for novel-writing.

The success of J.M. Barrie and the Kailyard school of sentimental, homey writing had created a demand for stories in Lowland Scots when Crockett published his successful story of The Stickit Minister during 1893. It was followed by a rapidly produced series of popular novels frequently featuring the history of Scotland or his native Galloway 'The Raiders', published in 1894, a dashing tale of kidnap, love and adventure set in the wild country of Galloway. Crockett made considerable sums of money from his writing and was a friend and correspondent of R. L. Stevenson.

Crockett loved to explore the countryside with his young daughter, the girl being seated in a basket at the front of their tricycle. In Sweetheart Travellers, the pictures show them bowling along.

310 pages. Illustrated with frontispiece plate and 69 monochrome illustrations. Each short chapter begins with a small drawing and the first letter of the first sentence within a small border shape and a small illustration.
