1925 edition hardback of the RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM by Omar Khayyam. Edward Fitzgerald's translation with twelve illustrations by Blanche Macmanus and published by De La More Press, London, in 1925.The book is in very good condition (Clean red cloth boards with gilt decorations on front and gilt lettering on spine). The illustrated paper dust jacket, which is not price clipped, is in good condition with slight wear (a small closed tear to the bottom edge, minor creasing to the edges, a small stain at the back and some tanning). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. There is a previous owner's gift inscription on the front end paper.
Omar Khayyam was a Persian astronomer and mathematician born in the later part of the 11th century. His quatrains that express his philosophy of love and life in the eleventh century, in Persia, received very little notoriety in its day and did not come to the public's attention until Edward FitzGerald published them in English in 1859. and even then they were ignored until the painter Dante Rossetti discovered a remaindered copy two years later and excitedly spread news of it around his intellectual and artistic circles. Not a direct translation, these liberal interpretations make Khayyam's verse accessible to readers in the English language.
"Rubaiyat" - derived from the Arabic root word for 4 - means "quatrains": verses of four lines. The translations that are best known in English are those of about a hundred verses by Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883) published between 1859 and 1889.
