Roy Lewis ENOCH POWELL First Edition

First edition, first print hardback of ENOCH POWELL Principle in Politics, by Roy Lewis and published by Cassell Ltd., London, 1979.

The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with silver lettering on the spine) with minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (slight creasing to the edges and light rubbing to the corners). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is slight tanning to the last few pages.

"Enoch Powell is perhaps one of the most able, yet perplexing figures on the contemporary political scene. In this major work, Roy Lewis sets out to answer many of the questions that surround a man who, for some years now, has been an important but enigmatic part of British politics.

Why does Powell think membership of the EEC fatal to Britain, when he advocated it in 1962? Why, in 1968 did he say immigration might lead to civil war, when he ignored it at the general election of 1964? Why did he find the Commonwealth a dangerous myth in 1965, when he campaigned on the imperial connexion in 1950? Why did he vehemently oppose devolution and self-government for Scotland in 1977, while representing an Ulster constituency for a party which wants Stormont restored to Northern Ireland? Why does he think trade union demands have no effect on inflation which, he says, can be readily ended by the Government almost 'at a stroke'? Above all, why did he, a High Tory, refuse to stand as a Conservative in 1974, after winning a popularity which rivalled that of Heath himself? And how are these alleged 'U-turns' to be reconciled in a political philosophy which is completely and organically logical and self-consistent?

In this comprehensive study of Powell the politician in action and Powell the political thinker, the author shows how rigorous adherence to principle in politics and conduct has shaped one of the most remarkable careers in Parliament. But Roy Lewis goes further, demonstrating how that same principle has developed a political personality held in continuing esteem by a large (if sometimes puzzled) section of the public, and how, beneath apparent changes of front, logic and consistency have enabled Powell to make extremely accurate forecasts of the consequences attending the mistaken policies of his opponents and his colleagues."
