Roger Upton A BIRD IN THE HAND First Edition
First edition, first print hardback of A BIRD IN THE HAND (Celebrated Falconers of the Past) by Roger Upton (with a foreword by the Duke of St. Albans) and published by Debrett's Peerage Limited in 1980.The book is in very good condition (green cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with some light denting to the bottom of the back board. The dust jacket, which is not price clipped, is in very good- condition with light creasing/curling to the top and bottom of the front and back covers and top of the spine, as well as a one inch closed tear to the bottom corner of the front cover. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
A Bird in the Hand is not a history of falconry - nor does it claim to be a comprehensive survey of all celebrated falconers. It is rather an evocation of the spirit which inspired a few dedicated men to devote their time, their apparently inexhaustible energy, and their money to a sport which, without their enthusiasm, must certainly have died out.
It is a book which all falconers and ornithologists will cherish, but one which will also appeal to field sports enthusiasts of every kind and, indeed, to anyone interested in the social history of British rural life.
155 pages richly illustrated with black & white photographs and illustrations, plus Acknowledgements, Foreword, Hawking Records, Bibliography, Glossary and Index.
