Retired British competitive figure skater Robin Cousins is the 1980 Olympic Champion, the 1980 European champion, a three-time (1978, 1979 & 1980) World medalist and four-time (1977, 1978, 1979 & 1980) British national champion. He later starred in ice shows and also produced his own. Cousins has made the successful transfer from sport to stage, playing the Prince in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Munkustrap in Cats, and Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Show in the West End. He has also commentated on figure skating events for the BBC. Since 2006 he has been on the panel of judges on ITV's Dancing on Ice and takes the position of head judge.
"For the first time Olympic gold medallist Robin Cousins tells his own remarkable story - a story of determination and perseverance in the face of obstacles and injuries which more than once threatened his ambition to become a great ice skater.
In one glittering season, with the eyes of millions focused on him, Robin Cousins won first the European title and then the Gold Medal at Lake Placid. Even after his hairsbreadth defeat in the subsequent World Championship - due to relatively weak figures - he is acknowledged as easily the world's best free skater. But behind the glamour of the major championships there were years of effort, training and grit, and here the Cousins family, fellow skaters and trainer Carlo Fassi, contribute to the story.
This is a disarmingly frank account of how a young boy who loved cartwheels and handstands became the most brilliantly daring performer ever seen on skates. More articulate than many leading sportsmen, level-headed and perceptive, Robin Cousins has lucidly recorded the joys, agonies, tensions and pride of achievement which have all played their part in his single-minded rise to the very top."
