When Cwm Colliery closed Johnny Price went off to war - in Spain. Not, like others, out of political conviction. For him it was economical necessity. And like all the other merchant seamen who 'ran the blockade' he became entangled with the adventure of someone else's war.
Manuel Sanchez had no commitment to war. He went to Spain from Mexico to fight bulls. But because his government supported Madrid against Franco insurgents, he was at special risk. He had to fight more than bulls to survive.
By contrast, Judy Ambrose was committed to the Spanish crusade. Her deadly marksmanship was a bonus to the Basques, until she discovered gentleness and passiveness in love.
Three people with different attitudes found their lives entwined by the adventure of war.
