Robert M Pirsig LILA True First Edition

First American edition, first print hardback of LILA (An Inquiry Into Morals) by Robert M. Pirsig and published by Bantam Books, New York in 1991. Full numberline 0 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 on the copyright page.

The book is in near fine condition (two-tone - dark blue/light green - cloth boards with silver lettering to spine) with a bit of light wear to the glossy dust jacket, which is not price clipped (one-inch scratch/indentation to top of front cover just under the first 'R' of 'Robert' that is almost a tear but isn't). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or inscriptions. Rough-cut front page edges as favoured by American publishing houses.

In LILA, Robert M. Pirsig brings us a new voyage, as mysterious and compelling as the journey in his first life-changing work Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance. Instead of a motorcycle, a cruising sailboat carries his philosopher-narrator Phaedrus down the Hudson River as winter closes in.

Phaedrus has a most unlikely traveling companion: a woman named Lila, picked up in a riverside bar, who in her desperate sexuality, hostility and approaching madness threatens to disrupt his life's work.
