Robert Lacey is a British historian noted for his original research. He is the author of numerous international bestsellers. After writing his first works of historical biography, Robert, Earl of Essex and Sir Walter Raleigh, Robert wrote Majesty, his pioneering biography of Queen Elizabeth II. Published in 1977, Majesty remains acknowledged as the definitive study of British monarchy - a subject on which the author continues to write and lecture around the world, appearing regularly on ABC's Good Morning America and on CNN's Larry King Live.
The Kingdom, a study of Saudi Arabia published in 1981, is similarly acknowledged as required reading for businessmen, diplomats and students all over the world. In 1984 Robert Lacey wrote Ford: the Men and the Machine, a best seller on both sides of the Atlantic which formed the basis for the TV mini-series the same title, starring Cliff Robertson.
Robert's other books include biographies of the gangster Meyer Lansky, Princess Grace of Monaco and a study of Sotheby's auction house. He co- authored The Year 1000 - An Englishman's World, a description of life at the turn of the last millennium. In 2002, the Golden Jubilee Year of Queen Elizabeth II, he published Royal (Monarch in America).
"This volume of Robert Lacey's Great Tales opens with Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and the flowering of modern English language in the final years of the fourteenth century. It culminates with the Glorious Revolution of 1688-9, when Parliament secured tighter control of the Crown for which it had fought forty years earlier in the battles of the Civil War.
The centuries in between witnessed some of the truly classic stories of English history: Dick Whittington and his elusive cat; an account of the Battle of Agincourt, in which we learn the origins of the V-sign, the notorious 'Agincourt salute'; Joan of Arc; The Wars of the Roses; William Caxton, whose first printed edition of Chaucer became the most expensive book ever sold six centuries later; and the tragic tale of the Princes in the Tower.
The Tudor dynasty followed: Henry VIII and the Dissolution of the Monasteries; his daughter Elizabeth and the defeat of the Spanish Armada; Mary Queen of Scots and her Stuart legacy, which, by way of Guy Fawkes, Oliver Cromwell, Charles II and the Great Fire of London, led to the reign of William and Mary.
With his genius for the popular touch, Robert Lacey has drawn on the most up-to-date research to present a riveting, ongoing narrative, highlighting all the most pivotal, entertaining and exciting landmarks in the history of our nation."
