First UK edition, first print hardback of SECRETS OF THE GNOMES. Illustrations by Rien Poortvliet and text by Wil Huygen and published by Pan Books Ltd., London, in 1982.
The book is in good condition. No dust jacket. (clean Illustrated glossy boards and black and red lettering on front and spine) with slight wear (light creasing around the spine edges, rubbing & chipping to the top corners, otherwise borads are clean and sturdy). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.
Rien Poortvliet (1932 – 1995) was a Dutch draughtsman and painter. He was best known for his drawings of animals and for "Gnomes" in the famous series of books by Wil Huygen. With the Gnomes series Poortvliet acquired international fame. While he was alive, but more so after his death, this series took on a life of its own, and was turned into an animated series. His books were translated into several languages.
Gnomes is the product of author/ illustrator's observation of the local gnome population in Holland. Until Gnomes was first published in Dutch in 1976, these friendly nocturnal creatures were only represented in folklore; descriptions were often incomplete or simply inaccurate.
Poortvliet and Huygen, having studied and interviewed gnomes for two decades, set out to fill this gap with their own encyclopedic tome. Gnomes covers all areas of gnome culture, including architecture, education, courtship, medicine, industry, and relationships with other mythical creatures. Huygen's sober descriptions are balanced by Poortvliet's light-hearted portrayals of gnomes at work and at play.
Secrets of the Gnomes is a sequel to "Gnomes" by the same team. The story of the authors' arduous journey through the bitterly cold north and their many fascinating encounters in the world of gnomes. An account of the life and work of gnomes, based on first-hand observations by the author and artist, who, themselves turned into gnomes, visited with gnomes in Lapland and Siberia.
