Richard Gordon is the pen name used by Gordon Ostlere, an English surgeon and anaesthetist. As Richard Gordon, Ostlere has written several novels, screenplays for film and television and accounts of popular history, mostly dealing with the practice of medicine. He is most famous for a long series of comic novels on a medical theme starting with Doctor in the House, and the subsequent film, television and stage adaptations. From the jacket blurp:
"In 1910, Dr Crippen and his mistress Ethel Le Neve were accused in London of murdering his wife Belle Elmore, the talentless music hall artiste. His capture 'by wireless' across the Atlantic, Belle's remains under the cellar floor in respectable Hilldrop Crescent - her head and bones have not been found to this day - won Crippen his place in the Chamber of Horrors. He is a familiar waxwork - but Richard Gordon has recreated the man of mystifying personality amid the suavities and savageries of the Edwardian age, a dominating influence on the young revolutionary Eliot Beckett, who rose to be King George V's physician.
The critics' praise for Richard Gordon's The Private Life of Jack the Ripper is fully justified by this exciting and entertaining novel of the days when the world seemed set fair for ever."
