First edition first print hardback of THE ROAD FROM WIGAN PIER (Memoirs of a linguist) by Richard D. Lewis and published by Transcreen Publications in 1998. Signed with a personal message to a previous owner by Lewis on the front endpaper.The book is in near fine condition (black cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with no significant wear. The book is in a near fine unclipped dust jacket which also has no wear to speak of. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Lewis came from a Yorkshire mining community a piece of coal's throw from Wigan Pier, and learned at an early age that he had a talent for learning languages. He holds a degree in Modern Languages and is one of Britains foremost linguists. He founded the Berlitz schools in East Asia, Portugal and Finland and spent several years in Japan, where he was personal tutor to Empress Michiko and five other members of the Japanese Imperial family.
