First edition first print hardback of HORNCHURCH SCRAMBLE (Volume One: 1915 the the End of the Battle of Britain) by Richard C Smith and published by Grub Street in 2000. Signed to a previous owner by Smith and 8 veterans on the half title page. The signatures are those of: W Bird of 229 Squadron; Dave Davis of 222 (Spitfire) Squadron; G Reynolds of 2713 Squadron; Joy Caldwell WAAF Signals; John Gill of 74 Squadron; F/O Peter Brown of 41 Squadron, who also wrote the Introduction; and two others I am unable to identify.The book is in fine condition (black cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine) with no significant wear. The book is in a near fine unclipped dust jacket which has light creasing to edges and a small shop sticker on the back cover. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.
Hornchurch Scramble covers the history of the aerodrome from its early days as a Royal Flying Corps Home Defence base, battling the Zeppelin menace during the First World War, then pre-war build-up through the Munich Crisis. The outbreak of the Second World War, Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain are all fully detailed with personal accounts from pilots, ground-crew and WAAFs, including station records, combat reports etc.
