REILLY By Mary Rayner SIGNED
First edition, first print hardback of REILLY, by Mary Rayner and published by Victor Gollancz in 1987. Signed to 'Maria Best Wishes' by the author on the blank page opposite the title page (see picture below). The book is in near fine condition with only very minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (the merest rubbing/creasing to the edges, and bumping to corners, but this is hardly worth mentioning). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. Very slight spinal lean, again hardly worth mentioning as it is a small book.
Reilly is a tough, street-wise alley cat. One cold February night, seeking food and warmth, he wanders into Number Eight Jubilee Road, home of the Braithwaite sisters. Much to the disgust of the resident Braithwaite cats Bella and Blanche, Reilly quickly gains the sympathy of the sisters and wins a comfortable base.Hoping to establish a territory of his own he begins to explore the neighbourhood and soon gains two feline admirers. But this brings him into the path of Hitachi, the old Siamese cat who has reigned over the area for a number of years. Claws are bared and fur flies when the two meet. Reilly is confident, but Hitachi has help from an unexpected quarter. Has Reilly finally found the home he seeks, or will he be forced to move on?Mary Rayner knows cats well and has written a wickedly funny cat's eye view of both the feline and human world. This humorous, yet touchingly realistic tale will certainly secure the crafty but likeable Reilly a home in many hearts. Reilly is also vividly brought to life in Mary Rayner's black and white drawings.110 pages, illustrated with line drawings by the author. ISBN: 0 575 04031 9
