Ralph Steadman was born in 1936. He began his career as a cartoonist, and through the years has diversified into many creative fields. Ralph collaborated with Dr Hunter S. Thompson in the birth of 'gonzo' journalism, with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
He has also drawn covers for numerous music artists, including the Who, Frank Zappa and Ambrosia; he has illustrated classics such as Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island, Animal Farm and Psycho Too, The Devil's Dictionary, Psychogeography, and written and illustrated his own books, which include Sigmund Freud, I Leonardo and The Big I Am.
Steadman is also a printmaker, and has travelled the world's vineyards, culminating in his books The Grapes of Ralph, Untrodden Grapes and Still Life with Bottle. Steadman's recent books include his epic collection of bird illustrations, Extinct Boids.
The Big I Am is a view of God, a "synopsis" which is designed to accompany God's comments on the creation of the universe, and in which the author tells us what God observes and thinks about mankind.
Ralph Steadman was voted Illustrator of the Year in 1979 by the American Institute of Graphic Arts and his other book "I, Leonardo" won the 1987 W.H.Smith Illustration Award.
After being Leonardo da Vinci in his prize-winning book, I Leonardo, there was only one way to go, so Ralph Steadman went there, into the mind and motivations of none other than God, and 'The Big I Am' was born.
The original Big Mover himself is trying to tell us something and does so through the extraordinary instrument of Ralph Steadman's imagination, through his words and, above all, his pictures. Let his words pour over you 'like warm embrocation' and you will be taken on a journey into uncharted territory, on a voyage you may even believe - and one that you may never forget.
Anger , pain, frustration, fear - Steadman's God feels things in a true and very human sense as he splashes his inimitable pen slashes accross the story as old as time itself. The colour, fervour and passion in this collection roars off the page as only a Steadman image can.
Demons wallow, man chastises and God despairs as primeval slime evolves into dinosaurs whose carcusses evenutally litter a landscape in which new urges pulse. Angels weep and man developes ever new weird and wonderful ways to worship the unknowable, unfathomable force in this incredible collection. Ralph Steadman creates new myths and legends and his drawings underscore man's need to believe and control the beliefs of his fellow man."
