Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First edition, first print paperback of THE JAGUAR SMILE (A Nicaraguan Journey) by Salman Rushdie and published by Picador/Pan Books Ltd in 1987. Signed and dated (3.2.1987) 'Best Wishes' to a previous owner by Rushdie on the title page. Early presentation copy. Full numberline 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1.

The book is in very good condition with light creasing to the top corner of the front cover, bottom of the spine and the edge of the back cover. The spine has no reading crease. The page edges are age tanned with some light rubbing. Internally, the pages are age tanned but tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

Salman Rushdie went to Nicaragua in July 1986, not knowing what to expect. What he discovered was overwhelming: a culture of masks with bullet holes in their foreheads, and of heroes who turned into covered markets. (Sandino himself turned into his hat,) He was haunted by ghosts, engulfed by poets, lectured on Tagore. He saw a computer that had been murdered by the Contra, and ran across an imaginary dog that could eat real books.

The Jaguar Smile is about power, powerlessness, beauty, blood, death. It's about the Nicaragua behind the headlines, about the fixing of beauty contests, and about a pair of disembodied, bloodied jaws from which Rushdie, in a nightmare, had to run for his life.

170 pages, plus Acknowledgements.
