Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First UK edition, first print hardback of THE HORIZON by Douglas Reeman and published by William Heinemann Limited, London in 1993. Signed by Reeman on the title page.

The book is in very good condition (Clean blue cloth boards with silver lettering on the spine) with only minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (very small fingernail closed tear to the bottom edge of the front cover and the very lightest bumping to corners). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. There is some tanning to the pages.

The third book in the Blackwood - Royal Marines saga. It takes Jonathan Blackwood into the 1914-1918 war, and the stark realisation that the days of scarlet coats, the square of battle and the Corps' unchanging tradition of honour and glory have gone forever.

The story is in two parts. The first, the Gallipoli campaign, offers a horrifying initiation into a war of which the young marines have little understanding, and for which no training has prepared them.

The second half concerns the Naval Division in Flanders and trench warfare - the awful losses and the futility, while the minds of the general staff have been left far behind by the savagery of a conflict they cannot control.

The title of the novel refers to the dark lip of the trench, which greeted the marines every morning, and was too often the last thing they saw.

291 pages.
