Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First edition, first print hardback of MEMORIES, by Frances Partridge and published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., London in 1981. Signed and inscribed by Frances Partridge on the front free endpaper.

The book is in very good condition (Clean blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine, with light fading to the spine and along the edges) with minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to the edges). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. There are some large age spots to the page ends.

Frances Partridge is recognised as one of the great British diarists. She began writing her diaries at the start of the Second World War but only to publish them in her seventies. Francis Partridge's diaries are the record of a woman who not only participated in the lives of the legendary Bloomsbury group, but was the circle’s oldest surviving member until her death in 2004, aged 103.

Her diaries, written without thought of publication, chronicle a remarkable life. She has translated many books and with her husband Ralph edited the Greville Memoirs.

"Bloomsbury was Frances Partridge's destiny. Topographically, she spent her early years there. Her closest school-friend was Julia Strachey; already the great figures were touching her life (Roger Fry built a complicated sand-castle for her). Lytton Strachey's sister was the Principal of her Cambridge college.

Her first job was in a bookshop run by David Garnett and Francis Birrell. And her marriage to Ralph Partridge put her at the centre of the Bloomsbury circle, among 'the Woolves' (Virginia and Leonard), the Bells, Duncan Grant, Maynard Keynes, the Desmond MacCarthys. She was there...

So much has been said about Bloomsbury, Frances Partridge writes, that she intends to add only her personal impressions. She holds to this, but she was so much at the heart of the magic circle that these impressions are deeply revealing. She describes intimate conversations and elaborate parties, foreign travel and improbable friendships...

And that is the spirit, too, in which she has written these immensely fascinating, entertaining and perceptive memoirs. At the least, this is a great gossip book; but, much more than that, it is another journey into a strange and vanished world."

244 pages. Illustrated with black & white photographs.
