Second edition, seventh impression (Forty-six thousandth hardback copy) of THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER And Other Verses by Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson and published by Macmillan and Co Ltd. London, in 1914.

The book is in good condition (blue boards and gold lettering on spine) with slight wear (light creasing / rubbing to the spine edges, slight bumping to the corners, slight rubbing to the edges and corners and the back board which has caused fading to the colour). No dust jacket. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. There is a previous owner's inscription and a bookseller's embossed stamp on the front endpaper. There is slight tanning to the pages and some foxing which is mainly to the front and back endpapers, page ends and a few pages inside. There is a creasing line across the back endpaper.

Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson (1864-1941) wrote poems and stories in the radical and nationalist tradition (as did his contemporary, Henry Lawson). Many had themes of a federated Australia. His writings continue to be popular and in print.

He was also a journalist, often reporting on the spot; as during the shearers strikes of the 1890s, the South African Anglo- Boer War (1899-1902) and the Middle East campaign of World War 1. He drove ambulances in France in World War I. He was made a CBE in 1939. In South Africa he wrote Song of the Federation in 1901.

Paterson is best known as a bush balladist; Clancy of the Overflow (1889); Man from Snowy River (1895). He gathered and published the first collection of Australian folk ballads The Old Bush Songs; (1905). He wrote for children, The Animals Noah Forgot (1933), a poetry collection.

He is commemorated in the Banjo Paterson Award made biennially by the Orange Festival of Arts for one-act plays and poetry and the National Book Council's Banjo Awards made annually.

"The Man From Snowy River & Other Verses was first published in The Bulletin, on 26 April 1890. The poem tells the story of a chase to recapture a valuable colt. 'The Man' - who is not identified by name - rides down a suicidally steep slope to rescue the horse, collect the reward money and become a local hero.

It is thought that the character of The Man from Snowy River was based on Jack Riley from Corryong, although a strong case has been made that 'the Man' is a composite character from a number of people Paterson met.

The poem was written at a time when there was a groundswell of sentiment towards Australia as a new and distinct nation apart from the British Empire, and the bush settings and characters in poems by Paterson and Henry Lawson served to emphasise the growing 'difference' in national identity.

Several films, a television series and a musical have been made from the story, proof of its enduring power to captivate Australians to this day.

First published as a book by Angus & Robertson on 17 October 1895, The Man From Snowy River & Other Verses took the country by storm and has remained one of Australia's best selling and most popular books ever since. The classic title poem by the Bard of the Bush, A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson, continues to inspire the spirit of our nation in readers today."
