Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First UK edition, first print hardback of THE EMIGRE by Joan Brady and published by Secker & Warburg Ltd., London, in 1999. Signed by Joan Brady on the title page. Full the number line 2 4 6 8 10 9 7 5 3 1 on the copyright page.

The book is in very good condition (Clean black cloth boards with silver lettering on the spine) with only slight wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (slight creasing mainly around the top edges, small closed tear at the back top corner of the spine). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions.

"Life is a Garden of Eden. You want money? You scam it. You want sex? You take it. You want talent? You steal it. That’s what conmen do. Nicholas Strakhan was born to live by his wits.

From his father, an émigré Russian count in Paris with fascist sympathies and a taste for the finer things in life, he inherits charm. His talent for music comes from his mother. Young Nikolas resolves to become a great concert pianist, but he isn’t quite gifted enough to reach the heights - there's no heart in his playing - and all his wit and ruthlessness cannot overcome the void. So he strikes a bargain. With the devil? Who knows? Talent is such a mysterious thing.

In London, Nikolas encounters the conman's dream, an heiress who is enthralled by him. In the course of a long and tempestuous relationship, Priscilla, Countess of Carmarth, becomes variously his lover, his patron, his fiancée and finally his most lethal opponent.

Fast-paced, brilliantly plotted, epic in scope, The Émigré is a story of the terrifying consequences of obsession, and the fascination exerted by a man in whom the geometries of power, music and evil fatally align."

Joan Brady is one of Britain's most highly acclaimed writers. She won the 1993 Whitbread Book of the Year and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger for the international bestseller Theory of War. This is Brady's fourth novel.
