Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First edition, first print hardback of RUSSKA, by Edward Rutherfurd and published by Random Century in 1991. Rare and unique signed and dated inscription to previous owner by Rutherfurd on the title page that reads: '7.12.91, To Richard and Peggy Heaven, From Maple Ridge BC, To Sarum AD! , So Pleasant to Find, Heaven in Both Places, Edward Rutherfurd' (see picture below).

The book is in near fine condition (clean red boards and bright gold lettering on spine) with only minor wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (thumbnail tear to top corner, small stain on inside of otherwise very good.). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. Previous owner name on inside front board. Some page yellowing, otherwise a clean, tight, sturdy copy for a large heavy book.

This is a vast historical novel, a fictional family saga set against a thoroughly researched background, telling the story of Russia - that most mysterious and complex of nations. The destinies of four different families cross and criss-cross through the rich narrative, but the focus of the drama is the quintessential Russian village, lying east of Moscow, in the Russian heartland between the Don and Volga rivers. When the conquerors comes from the steppe, they often take the village; and when the Slavs expand again, the village is one of the first they reclaim. It is, therefore, both at the heart of Russia and on the border where so much historical change is made.
