Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First UK edition, first print hardback of THE AMBASSADOR, by Edwina Currie and published by Little, Brown and Company, London in 1999. Signed by the author on the title page.

The book is in very good condition (Clean blue boards with gold lettering on spine which has very slight creasing to the top & bottom edge and very slight water staining on the front board) with only slight wear to the dust jacket, which is not price clipped (slight creasing to the edges mainly around the spine edges and slight moisture staining to the front not visible from outside). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no other inscriptions. There is slight tanning towards the page ends. There is a 'Signed By The Author' sticker on the front cover.

"In the year 2099, the free world is dominated by the European Union, climate change & gene therapy. Comprising 42 nations and over a billion people, the EU is more powerful than the United States, and while 'cloning' is not mentioned in polite society, it's happening, and seen as tremendous progress in the battle against ageing and disease. 'NT's (Nuclear Transplants) are fully integrated into society.

America however, has been captured by fundamentalists opposed to the medical advances. And when Bill Strether is sent by the US President to represent his country in London, he too harbours doubts over its ethics. Guided by two NT insiders - Prince Marius Vronsky, an elected member of the House of Lords, and Dr Lisa Pasteur, a proud and able scientist - he comes to realise the full breathtaking extent of the official genetic programme, and finds it impossible to condemn. But when files go missing, a chromosome disintegrates, and a sinister lorry is seen leaving the laboratory late one night, the true dangers become apparent.

Scientific discovery is both Pandora's Box and Ali Baba's cave. When faced with the astonishing array of choices offered to us by the new genetic knowledge, how do we choose? In The Ambassador, Edwina Currie has created an extraordinarily vivid portrait of how the world could look - and think - one hundred years from now: a novel as thought-provoking and thrilling as it is gripping."

439 pages.
