Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First GGBP edition paperback of LONE PINE LONDON by Malcolm Saville and published by Girls Gone By Publishers, Somerset in 2010. It was first published in 1957. This complete and unabridged edition is now out of print.

The book is in near fine condition (clean illustrated covers and red lettering on the front and spine) with only minor shelf wear. Internally, the pages are clean and tight, there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Malcolm Saville was born in 1901. He is best known for the Lone Pine series of children's books, many of which are set in Shropshire. His work emphasises location; the books include many vivid descriptions of English countryside, villages and sometimes towns. Saville's writing career, from 1943 to 1982, was a diversion from his working life that began at Oxford University Press then continued as a publicist with Cassell & Co., Associated Press, and George Newnes.

He was later the editor of two magazines, taking over one of these – the well-remembered Sunny Stories – from Enid Blyton when she left to set up her own magazine in direct competition.

Several of his 90 books were serialised for broadcast on BBC radio, and his 1953 book The Ambermere Treasure, part of the Jillies series, was serialised by Associated-Rediffusion, the first commercial television company to broadcast in the United Kingdom, in late 1955 and early 1956; it was therefore one of the first ITV children's drama series. He died in 1982.

GGBP published his Lone Pine series starting with Where's My Girl in 2005.

Lone Pine London was first published by George Newnes Ltd., in 1957 and it is the tenth book in the Lone Pine series following Wings over Witchend (1956).

Lone Pine is the longest, and most popular, of the series. Twenty books and a short story make up the series. The books were produced over 35 years, and the backgrounds of the stories are dated at when they were published. But the characters age no more than a few years over the series.

Girls Gone By published this complete and unabridged paperback edition in November 2010; Mary Cadogan's new introduction to this book is followed by a brief article on the author by Mark O'Hanlon and an article on the story's locations and period history by George Jasieniecki. This is followed by the book's illustrated publishing history and notes on the text of the book.

"Jon and Penny Warrender visit the Mortons in London and fall into a dangerous adventure around the capital's streets. The Morton twins play a crucial role, as does a neighbourhood antique shop. Its owner's grand-daughter, Harriet, is later to become a Lone Pine Club member."

282 pages.
