Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

Revised edition hardback of a much sought after modern day falconry classic: GAMEHAWK FIELD AND MOOR by Ray W. Turner and Andrew Haslen and published by Gallery Press, Suffolk in 1996. Includes an extra chapter on Grouse Hawking not in the original edition.

The book is in near fine condition (Clean light brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine), with no more than very minor shelf wear to the dust jacket which is not price clipped. Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions.

Ray Turner was a well-known falconer and falcon-breeder when his book "Gamehawk" won acclaim from falconers worldwide. Through it's pages, in the hope of encouraging the finest falconry in these days, vital yet forgotten rules and secrets from the past were revealed alongside newer hard-won rules and secrets drawn from his thirty years of falconry experience. But the first and oldest rule has never been a secret...

Ray W. Turner and Andrew Haslen started hawking together in 1972, and the partnership has continued ever since. For many years Ray has been breeding Peregrines for other falconers. Many fine hunting hawks that were bred at Great Lodge are now in the hands of enthusiastic falconers throughout the world.

A notable falcon amongst them, owned by Steve Williams, was the first captive-bred falcon ever to catch a ptarmigan in the British Isles. The last ptarmigan recorded to have been taken by any trained falcon previously to this, fell to one of Colonel Thornton's in Sutherland, in 1786, during his 'Northern Tour'.

Another 'famous' Peregrine from Ray's mews is the exciting and deadly tiercel known as 'PJ' owned by Marc Tucker and flown at partridges and grouse. Both hawks are fine examples of what careful breeding and the best management can achieve.

Ray is a long-standing member of the B.F.C., and also of N.A.F.A.. the premier falconry club of North America, which he has often visited as a guest of American falconers.

Andrew is described by Christian de Chamerlat in 'Falconry and Art' as one of the country's foremost raptor artists. He is a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and one of his paintings was selected from an entry of one thousand to receive the Art Award which is given by 'Natural World', the magazine of the Royal Society for Nature Conservation. In 1988 in Suffolk he opened his own gallery, The Wildlife Art Gallery.

In this revised edition to the 1991 edition, a chapter on Grouse Hawking was added from information supplied by Steve Williams.

"For any lover of falconry there is much of interest in this study of one particular branch of the sport, the waiting-on flight of the Peregrine in Britain, but it breaks new ground in the presentation of its information and instruction through its mixture of anecdote, advice, and opinion.

A discussion of even a well-known subject can show the originality that comes from a fresh approach. The originality of this work is further enhanced by the highly individual flair of the illustrations, the frequent reference to the opinions and practices of the falconers of old, the observations on the behaviour of the quarry, the explanation of how that behaviour determined the falconers' strategies and tactics, and the liveliness of the accounts of the successes and defeats encountered on many winter afternoons.

Its appearance now, towards the close of the Twentieth Century, must be very welcome to anyone wishing to take advantage of recent advances and new opportunities, and to study how to create and enjoy the rare and exquisite spectacle of the high vertical stoop of Peregrine.

Unintentionally, the book developed into a tribute to one outstanding eyass Peregrine, 'Tassa'."
