Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

Penguin Boxed Set of Two paperbacks that make up the duology CLAUDIUS by Robert Graves and published by Penguin Books Ltd., UK, in 1977. The books are I, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD. First published in 1934 by Arthur Barker. Front cover Illustration by Brian Pike.

Both of the books are in near fine condition with only minor wear to the illustrated covers (only minor rubbing around the spines that's all ). The illustrated original box itself is in very good condition with minor shelf wear (only slight rubbing to the edges and corners). Internally, all of the books' pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is only minor tanning to the page ends around the spine.

Two masterly novels from Robert Graves - The basis for the BBC series with Derek Jacobi portraying Claudius.

I, CLAUDIUS: " Robert Graves' magnificent reconstruction of the grandeur, folly and vileness of imperial Rome.

Into the racy 'autobiography' of Clau-Clau-Claudius, the stammerer who was destined to become Emperor in spite of himself, Graves packs the everlasting intrigues, the depravity, the bloody purges and mounting cruelty of the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius, soon to culminate in the deified insanity of Caligula.

I, CLAUDIUS ranks among the best historical novels of our times.

395 pages. ISBN: 0 14 00 0318 5

CLAUDIUS THE GOD: "In the sequel to I, Claudius, a republican Roman Emperor writes the inside story of his reign. Men classed Claudius as a pitiful fool. But the reign he describes is far from folly. Reluctantly launched into the purple, he emerges as a man who erred on the side of good nature and credulity. It is the common people and the common soldiers who sustain him in his efforts to repair the damage of Caligula's reign, in his relations with the Jewish king, Herold Agrippa, his conquest of Britain, and his final reckoning with his promiscuous wife, Messalina."

439 pages. ISBN: 0 14 00 0421 1

In one of the finest historical reconstructions of the century Robert Graves has created a character to compare with Dostoyevsky's Prince Myshkin.
