First UK edition, first print hardback of HEKURA: THE DIVING GIRLS' ISLAND by Fosco Maraini (Translated from the Italian by Eric Mosbacher) and published by Hamish Hamilton Ltd in 1962. Previous owner name written on the front endpaper.

The book is in very good- condition (green cloth boards with gold lettering to spine) with very light bumping to the top corners of the front and back boards, light creasing to the top and bottom of the spine and very small indentations to the bottom edge of the back board. The page edges are lightly age spotted. The book is in a good- unclipped dust jacket that has wear to the edges of the covers, one inch open tears to the top and bottom of the spine, and thumbnail closed tears to the top and bottom of the back cover which is also rather soiled. Internally, the pages are lightly age tanned but tight and there are no tears.

Japan, with its unique combination of ancient and modern, has always fascinated travellers. But few people have taken the trouble to visit the obscure island of Hekura, which offers one of the least expected sights in the whole of this most paradoxical of countries. For it is here that the girls of the Ama tribe dive for pearls.

The habits, religion and feasts of this tribe are interesting enough; but it is the girls themselves, diving almost naked and priding themselves on their strange vocation, who are the chief subject of the illuminating text of Fosco Maraini, famous for his books on Tibet and Karakoram.

Embellishing this narrative are seventy-four of the most brilliant photographs, of which thirty-four are in colour, ever to enhance the basic fascination of a travel book. There are photographs of the island, of the priests and the fishermen and of the houses they live in. But, rightly dominating all else, are the girls themselves, on dry land and under-water, graceful and strong, resilient and beautiful.

94 pages, plus Some Books about the Ama.
