First UK edition, first print hardback of ROMMEL? GUNNER WHO? A Confrontation in the Desert by Spike Milligan and edited by Jack Hobbs. Published by Michael Joseph Ltd., London, in 1974. Jacket design by the author. Volume 2 of the War Memoirs.

The book is in very good condition (clean black boards and gilt lettering on spine) with only minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (light creasing to edges, minor foxing / yellowing inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears. There is a previous owner's neat inscription at the top of the title page.

Spike Milligan was one of the greatest and most influential comedians of the twentieth century. Born in India in 1918, he served in the Royal Artillery during WWII in North Africa and Italy. At the end of the war, he forged a career as a jazz musician, sketch-show writer and performer, before joining forces with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe to form the legendary Goon Show.

Until his death in 2002, he had success on stage and screen and as the author of over eighty books of fiction, memoir, poetry, plays, cartoons and children's stories.

Spike's legendary war memoirs are a hilarious and subversive first-hand account of the Second World War, as well as a fascinating portrait of the formative years of this towering comic genius. They have sold over 4.5 million copies since they first appeared.

Rommel? Gunner Who?: Spike Milligan's second volume of war autobiography spans events from January to May 1943, during Operation Torch, the Allied liberation of Africa in World War II.

"What was the effect on the German troops of Gunner Milligan playing `Mother Macree' in the midst of the shelling of an Observation Post on a lonely hill in Tunisia? Will we ever know?

This volume covers Spike's march to war in the desert: a tragi-comic saga of bawdy farce mixed with introspection and day-to-day reportage of the fears and fun of a group of gunners, nursing in their bosom the embryo Goon, forever punning, playing his trumpet or, if on guard duty, disguising himself as a tree in a hole. (His C. O. sent his batman to pour a can of water over him.)

The confusion of war for the private soldier is conveyed in a touching and characteristically Milligan manner. The language is rich and racy, the wisdom earthy and soldierly. The stories include an account of an exciting night out in the WVS tearooms in Algiers, and another of the Battery's long march to the Front with our wily Author comfortably ensconced in the back of a truck.

Faced with irreverent humour such as this, Rommel didn't have a chance. (Did the Germans know the secret qualities of bromide?) If you were in the 1st or 8th Army, or even if you weren't, this book is an education. It's not on edible paper this time, it's all in code; if you don't understand it, keep trying - there's a prize of a 28-year-old compo ration for the best translation. Buy the book for God's sake - Milligan is still repaying an old pontoon debt from the Western desert, and he needs the royalty."

'The most irreverent, hilarious book about the war that I have ever read' - Sunday Express
