Item description, condition report, payment options and related products below

First edition, first print hardback of Collins New Naturalist Library No. 105 WYE VALLEY by George Peterken and published by HarperCollins Publishers, London, in 2008.

The book is in fine condition (clean green cloth boards and gold lettering on spine) with only minor wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (there is slight sticker removal damage at the back, which has obliterated some letters above the bar code - see picture below). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions - but for the minor blemish to the back cover of the dust jacket, the book would be in very fine condition.

A definitive natural history of the Wye Valley, from its appeal to the enthusiastic naturalist, to the geology, geomorphology, conservation and ecological history of this diverse area.

"The spectacular landscape of the Wye Valley, on the border between England and Wales, has attracted visitors for over 250 years. Dominated by the River Wye, it is one of our few lowland Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is a region of contrasts, with great limestone cliffs, extensive ancient woods, numerous remnants of semi-natural grassland and a picturesque river.

George Peterken has lived in the region for many years and helped to draft the AONB's Nature Conservation Strategy. Here he examines the diverse ecology, natural history, landscape and history of this district defined mainly by the extraordinary evolution of the river Wye. This meandering mature river entrenched in the varied geology of the landscape.

Peterken also explores the results of conservation efforts in the region, recognising that despite the protection afforded to the 'outstanding natural beauty' of natural habitats and wild species, these have suffered substantial losses. However, many initiatives continue to promote effective conservation within the AONB and surrounding areas."

'The definitive guide to one of Britain's most unspoilt rivers … the introduction is impressive and lyrical, the descriptions of the river and its valley beautiful.’ - BBC Wildlife

George Peterken has worked independently for the Forestry Commission since 1992 while living in the Lower Wye Valley, where, with his neighbours, he has developed local community grassland conservation projects. He has specialised in woodland ecology and conservation for the Nature Conservancy, amongst others. He is currently president of the Gwent Wildlife Trust and an associate professor of Nottingham University. In 1994, George was awarded an OBE for services to forestry.

Collins New Naturalist series is the longest-running and arguably the most influential natural history series in the world with over 100 volumes published in over 60 years. Key contributors include Fraser Darling, Max Nicholson, Sir Alistair Hardy, W.G.Hoskins, Miriam Rothschild, Richard Fitter, Guy Mountfort and Niko Tinbergen making them a veritable Encylopaedia Britannica of British natural history in its broadest sense.

The New Naturalist books are a series published by Collins in the United Kingdom, on a variety of natural history topics relevant to the British Isles. The aim of the series at the start was: "To interest the general reader in the wild life of Britain by recapturing the inquiring spirit of the old naturalists." In the editors' preface to a 1952 monograph they write "An object of the New Naturalist series is the recognition of the many-sidedness of British natural history, and the encouragement of unusual and original developments of its forgotten or neglected facets."

The first to appear was E.B. Ford's Butterflies in 1945. The authors of this series are usually eminent experts, often professional scientists. This gives the series authority, and many are or have been authoritative introductory textbooks on a subject for some years. The books are written in scientific style, but are intended to be readable by the non-specialist, and are an early example of popular science in the media.

The original Editorial Board consisted of Julian Huxley, James Fisher, Dudley Stamp, John Gilmour and Eric Hosking. Many of the highly characteristic dust jacket illustrations are by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis; the latest ones are by Robert Gillmor.

Being a numbered series, with a very low print run for some volumes, they are highly collectable. Second-hand copies of the rarer volumes, in very good condition, can command high prices. In 2006, the 100th volume was produced. The series is on-going.

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 466 pages. Colour photographs and illustrations, maps, bibliography, decorative end-papers.
