First edition, first print hardback of LORD OF THE FOREST by 'BB' - Denys James Watkins-Pitchford and published by Methuen Children's Books Ltd., London, in 1975. Illustrated by the author.

The book is in very good condition (Clean brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine) with very slight wear to the illustrated dust jacket which is price clipped (minor creasing to the edges, a tiny nick to the top corner, some fading to the spine and some foxing to the flaps inside). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is slight foxing to the top page ends.

Denys James Watkins-Pitchford MBE (1905 – 1990) was a naturalist, an illustrator and a children's author under the pseudonym "BB". He grew up in Northamptonshire, where he spent many hours out in the open air as ill health prevented him from being sent to boarding school. He studied art in Paris and at The Royal College of Art in London and for seventeen years was art master at Rugby School. While at Rugby School he was to begin contributing regularly to the Shooting Times and start his career as an author and illustrator. He wrote under the nom de plume of 'BB', a name based on the size of lead shot he used to shoot geese, but he maintained the use of his real name as that of the illustrator in all his books.

He later illustrated books by other writers, and sold his own paintings locally. For The Little Grey Men, published in 1942, 'BB' won the annual Carnegie Medal in Literature from the Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book by a British subject. The Little Grey Men established him at the forefront of children's literature. Many titles followed for both adults and children, and his reputation as a naturalist was further enhanced by contributions to The Field, Country Life and Shooting Times. He died in 1990.

"On an October day in 1272 a boy herding pigs in the great Sussex forest of Andreswald plants an acorn...

This story is the subsequent history of its growth and life through six hundred years of British history to the time when the giant oak becomes a shattered ruin held together by iron hands. Human events from a moving background to this original book, with all its wealth of natural history, beautifully told through the eyes of a naturalist. As with all the 'BB' books, it is illustrated by the author in striking balck and white drawings."

127 pages. Illustrated with black & white drawings within the text.
