First UK edition, first print hardback of THE DISAPPEARANCE, by Philip Wylie and published by Victor Gollancz Ltd in 1951.

The book is in very good condition for its age (red boards have a few light stains to the back board and bright, unblemished black lettering on spine) with some wear to the paper dust jacket, which is not price clipped (rubbing/creasing to edges, light bumping to corners, top and bottom of spine a bit tatty, one inch tear in bottom corner of back cover, some darkening to the colour through age - it seems to have been a much brighter yellow at the time of publication, judging by the inside jacket flaps. The jacket is still complete and in good order, despite the points mentioned, with no obliteration of any lettering). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. Extremely light discolouration to page ends, but to my mind this is by no means an issue.

From the dust jacket blurb:

THE DISAPPEARANCE is primarily an adventure story. It is intended to entertain. Entertainment may be furnished by insight into character, by "realism", by the dramatic or fabulous nature of events, by humour, by philosophical implication, and by many other means. This story relies largely upon the methods named and especially upon two: fabulous event and philosophical implication.

This is the story of the vanishing - instant and inexplicable - of all human females and of a parallel disappearance of all males. It tells of the years that follow in a world of man and boys left alone and another world of women and girls left alone. The story is "scientifiction" of the Wells and Huxley sort only in a sense; where they extended a known or imagined principal of physical science to a new extreme, Philip Wylie has imagined a psychological condition translated suddenly to physical fact. That "condition" is the familiar schism of the sexes. In The Disappearance, the differentnesses of male and female, their antagonisms and special definitions of each other seem to crystalize and split them apart.

Those who enjoy adventure on the grand scale, excitement for its own sake, action and romance, may read The Disappearance breathlessly, with little attention to the author's reason for producing such a book. But for those who take a thoughtful interest in our age, our culture and our problems, the novel presents many ideas, some of which the reader will not have encountered anywhere.

351 pages. Very good example of a scarce first edition.
