First US edition, third print hardback of THE TRUELOVE by Patrick O'Brian and published by W.W. Norton & Company, Inc., New York in 1992. States 'First American Edition' and numberline 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 on the copyright page. Jacket illustration by Geoff Hunt.

The book is in very good condition (Clean quarter bound blue cloth over white boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Minor yellowing along the top edges of the boards) with light wear to the illustrated dust jacket, which is not price clipped (very light yellowing towards the edges inside the jacket). Internally, the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears and no inscriptions. There is a bookseller's sticker on the back.

The Truelove is the fifteenth novel in the best-selling Aubrey/Maturin series of naval tales.

"This magnificent installment in Patrick O'Brian's widely acclaimed series of Aubrey/Maturin novels is in equal parts mystery, adventure, and psychological drama.

A British whaler has been captured by an ambitious chief in the Friendly Isles (Tonga) at French instigation, and Captain Aubrey, R. N., is dispatched with the 'Surprise' to restore order. But stowed away in the cable-tier is a female convict who has escaped from the penal colony in New South Wales, the setting of 'The Nutmeg of Consolation.'.

To the officers, Clarissa Harvill is an object of awkward courtliness and dangerous jealousies. Aubrey himself is won over and indeed strongly attracted to this woman who will not speak of her past. But only Aubrey's friend, Dr. Stephen Maturin, can fathom Clarissa's secrets: her crime, her personality, and a clue identifying a highly placed English spy in the pay of Napoleon's intelligence service.

In a thrilling conclusion to the story, Patrick O'Brian delivers all the excitement his many readers expect: Aubrey and the crew of the 'Surprise' impose a brutal 'pax Britannica' upon the islanders in a pitched battle (on land!) against a band of headhunting cannibals."

256 pages. With an illustration of a Square-Rigged Ship and a terminology of the various sails.
